Aury produced what he would later claim was a Mexican Rebel flag (there are many that believe it was simply a tablecloth from his ship's cabin). This became the 6th of the 8 flags of Amelia Island.

Aury and his men were looking for treasure, gold to be specific. What they found was an open town, abandoned by the Spanish, with a flourishing economy based on the slave trade industry.
